The Wink Hub acts as a translator between your wireless network, smart devices, and the Wink App. It allows you to control and customize your smart home using 6 different wireless frequencies including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Lutron Clear Connect, and Kidde RF. Contrary to devices of the same type from other companies, the Wink Hub is a one-time purchase, and does not have a subscription fee attached to it.

Compatibility
Connection
- Wink Hub
- Apple® or Android™ smartphone or tablet (desktop browsers not supported).
- Wink App (latest version) via iTunes or Android app stores. iPad users can download the Wink App from the iPhone section of iTunes.
- Wi-Fi connection with 2.4GHz router / 20 MHz bandwidth and WPA-PSK security (initial connection only).
General Connection Tips
- When you first connect the Wink Hub to your Wi-Fi router your mobile device will make a direct connection to the Wink Hub. After this initial connection, all communication between your mobile device and the Wink Hub pass through Wink’s cloud services to maintain a connection wherever you are.
- Make sure your Wink Hub is at least 10-15 feet away from your wireless router (further for really powerful routers). When too close to a router, the Hub may experience interference that can prevent the Hub from connecting.
- If using iOS, turn on bluetooth and then restart the iOS device.
- Ensure the Wi-Fi network is using 2.4 GHz. Dedicated 5 GHz networks are not supported by the Hub.
- Make sure the password has no unusual characters. Stick to alphanumeric passwords.
- Putting Android phones into Airplane Mode and then enabling Wi-Fi will often make the process easier. Android phones (specifically Samsung Galaxies) have a default setting which causes the phone to jump between Wi-Fi or mobile data, depending on which connection is strongest. Disabling mobile data allows the phone to successfully pair the Hub.
- Download the Wink App from the Apple App Store or Google Play and follow the in-app instructions to sign up or login.
- Select “Wink Hub” and follow the in-app instructions for sharing your Wi-Fi network credentials to get your Wink Hub connected.
- After your Hub is connected, tap “Add a Product” to add Wink compatible products.
Troubleshooting
Placement of the Wink Hub
The Wink Hub is designed to use Wi-Fi to give you flexibility when choosing where to place the Hub in your home. For optimal performance, please follow these simple guidelines:
- The HUB should be located at least 15-20 feet away from any other Wi-Fi device such as routers, Wi-Fi repeaters, etc. When placed too close to a Wi-Fi device, the signal can overpower the Hub's other radios causing brief intermittent disconnections.
- Position your HUB in a centralized location that minimizes the distance between the Wink HUB and your connected devices.
- Stone, tile, mirrors, and large metal surfaces tend to interfere with wireless communication. Try to avoid placing your Wink HUB in locations that place these surfaces between the HUB and your connected devices.
- If possible, locate your HUB in an open space at least 3 feet above the floor. Avoid cabinets when possible.
- Range is very environmentally dependent but a typical residential installation may experience range up to 30 feet.
The Wink HUB is a Z-Wave Plus certified controller and supports basic functionality for the following Z-Wave Plus device types.
- Door Locks
- On/Off Switches
- Light Dimmer Switches
- Window Coverings
- Thermostats
- Door/Window Sensors
- Motion Sensors
Z-Wave inclusion options on the Wink app
- Inclusion Mode (add a new Z-Wave product to the HUB network)
- Exclusion Mode (remove a Z-Wave product from a network)
These can be accessed in the Wink App's settings menu of the Wink Hub section, and can be used to include or exclude generic Z-Wave products. The following sequence would be used to include a non-Wink certified product:
- Activate "Inclusion Mode"
- Wait approximately 10 seconds
- Trigger the pairing process inclusion on the device - this is product specific but generally requires pressing a button or applying power.
Note: Older Z-Wave devices that pair to Z-Wave Plus may be compatible with Wink, but have not been tested, and compatibility is not 100% guaranteed.
Access to a Wink account can be shared by either using the same master login credentials (owner of the Wink Account), or sharing access to the devices within the device settings page. Once in the device settings page you can input another user's Wink account email address to share.
Keep in mind that sharing the Wink Hub with another user will also make them co-owners of any future paired devices within the Wink App. In order to share devices without making users co-owners you will have to share each device separately.
In order to change the Wi-Fi network that your Wink Hub is connected to, perform the following sequence:
- Power cycle your HUB (unlplug it from power and plug back in).
- After several minutes the HUB should revert to configuration mode (flashing pink).
- Use the Wi-Fi Settings options within the HUB interface on the Wink App to send the new network information.
Wink Hubs & Power Outages
- The Wink Hub will automatically power cycle itself every 30 minutes and try to reconnect with the last saved Wi-Fi credentials.
- Customers who would like to force the hub to power cycle itself more quickly can do so manually and it shouldn't affect anything negatively.
- Power cycling the Hub remotely (e.g. vacation home) is possible if the customer is using some form of a SmartPlug Wi-Fi solution such as the iHome SmartPlug or the Pivot Power Genius.
- Another option is an IP Switch, which will let you power up the Wink Hub 5 mins after the electricity comes back on.
